For some time now, there have been talks about a salary cap in the English Premier League. Something, most of the clubs and players are arguing against. The last couple of weeks, Great Dane Football Blog, have been putting focus on the wages in the league, to find out if money wins trophies. Today, we have reached the final part.

The wages in the English Premier League are getting higher and higher, and Chelsea and Manchester City are often blamed for ruining football by spending much more than other clubs. The two clubs are in the top 5 of the richest clubs in England, but who are the others? Watch the clip below to get the answer.

According to Forbes’ list, the five clubs are all in the top 10 of richest clubs in the world. Spanish Real Madrid is positioned first with a value of 3.3 billion dollars, just ahead of Manchester United, second with 3,165 billion dollars. Arsenal is placed fourth on the list while Chelsea is seventh, Manchester City ninth and Liverpool tenth.

With help from The Telegraphs graphic of the Premier League spending of wages and transfers from 2001-2012, and The Guardians datablog, Great Dane Football Blog have gone through and compared the clubs spending on wages. Manchester City was latest promoted to the Premier League in 2002, so we start with the 2002/03 season. Watch the clip below to see how the spending on wages has developed.

Now that, we have answered the question, let’s take a look on how the wages are spent in the Premier League. The salary data used in the clip below are from the website matchincome.com, and while the website does not state where they have their data from other than it is a reliable source, they seem to tally up with the data found on the Guardian and the Telegraph earlier. It is important to remember that the data used only shows the basic salary and does not include any bonuses. Watch the clip below to see which player have earned most per match, and which club that has gotten most out of their money. Please note, that the film only uses match data from the Premier League 2012/13.

What do you think about the things you have seen in this post? Does the Premier League need a salary cap, and do the players deserve the money they get? Comment below!

For some time now, there have been talks about a salary cap in the English Premier League. Something, most of the clubs and players are arguing against. The last couple of weeks, Great Dane Football Blog, have been putting focus on the wages in the league, to find out if money wins trophies. Today, we take a look back on the just ended season, and what the players have earned per match in the Barclays Premier League.

Earlier in the 'Does money guarantee trophies?'-series we took a look on whom the best paid players in the Premier League are. This week, we will see how much the players have earned per match, and for the strikers per goal. The data used in this project is taken from Matchincome.com, and only displays the basic salary without any bonuses. The website does not state where they have their data from, but compared with the data from the guardian and the telegraph, used earlier in the series, the numbers tally up. Please note that the tables can be hard to read, I apologize for that! To see the tables in their original state, follow this link!

The table below shows how many matches each of the goalkeepers has played in the Barclays Premier League 2012/13. Furthermore, it shows how much the players have earned annually as well as per match played. Please note that goalkeepers that have not played a match this season has been let out of the data set.

To make it a bit easier to see, I have created the chart below. With his three matches, Ross Turnbull is by far the player who has earned best per match played, as every performance has brought him £187,843. Meanwhile, taking a look at the goalkeepers that have played most of the matches this season; Petr Čech, Pepe Reina, Wojciech Szczesny, Joe Hart and David De Gea, they have only earned around £16,000 per match. With Joe Harts 38 matches this season, earning him £13,512 per match, Manchester City is the team getting the most value for their money when it comes to goalkeepers and matches played.

Let's do the same with the defenders. Once again, the defenders that have not played a match has been let out of this data. Just from the table it is clear that the Chelsea is the club that have gotten least out of one of their defenders. With only one match,  Paulo Ferreira has earned his entire annual income of £576,680 on one performance.

On the chart below, it is easier to see what they players have earned per performance. While Chelsea paid a big salary compared to Paulo Ferreira's numbers of matches, Liverpool is the club getting the most value for their money with Daniel Agger. The Dane has an annual income of £541,270, and with 35 performances in the Premier League this year, it means that he has earned £15,465 per match.

We have now come to the midfielders, some of the most important players on the pitch. The best midfielders are also some of the highest paid, so it is going to be interesting to see if the clubs get value for their money. With only 2 matches and an annual salary of £520,024, Manchester United's 19-year old talent Nick Powell is the best paid midfielder. Meanwhile, the talent also contributed with one goal.

As you can see in the table as well as in the chart below Manchester United, is also the team getting the most value for the money with Michael Carrick, while Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey is the midfielder who has earned least per match played. Take a look at the chart to get the full view.

Finally, we have come to the attackers - the players that have a decisive influence on the match. How much do they earn per performance, and per goal based on the basic salary? As we want to see how much a goal is worth compared to the basic salary the goalscorer has been included in the table. Notice, once again that players that have not played and not scored have not been included.

Watching the table and comparing with the other positions on the pitch, it is clear that strikers are often playing close to the same number of matches, no matter what club they represent. The club that has gotten most value for the money when it comes to salary and matches played is Arsenal. Here, Olivier Giroud has played 34 matches, and with an annual wage of £510,919 it means he has earned £15,027 per match.

Meanwhile, if we compare the salary of the players with the numbers of goals scored, Manchester United and Liverpool are the two clubs getting most out of their money. In Manchester United, Robin van Persie has scored 26 goals this season, earning him £22,491 per goal while Luis Suarez with 23 goals has earned £23,753 per goal. Meanwhile, if we compare the salary with the amount of goals Fabio Borini's one goal for Liverpool in the Barclay Premier League has been a very valuable goal: £533,176! After all, football is about scoring goals!

Bayern Munich has already won the German League and is hoping to win their 5 Champions League title. Meanwhile, Dortmund is in their second final and can win the title for the second time. Match of the week is the Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Champions League Final 2013
Wembley Stadium
25-05-2013 @ 19.45 UK

How are the two teams form?

Borussia Dortmund ended second in the German Bundesliga, with 66 points after 34 matches. The last match of the season was lost against Hoffenheim. In the Champions League, the Germans won their group in front of Real Madrid while Shaktar Donetsk and Malaga was sent out before Dortmund met Real Madrid once again in the semi finals. Here, Dortmund surprised most people and are now ready to battle Bayern Munich for the title.

As mentioned, Bayern Munich won this year's Bundesliga and in convincing style. In Jupp Heynckes last season as manager for the South German team, they won the league with 91 points and a goalscorer of +80. In the Champions League, Munich shared the 1st in group F with Valencian before beating Arsenal, Juventus and Barcelona on their way to the final.

The last 10 matches between the two teams have ended in 5  victories for Dortmund, 2 draws and 3 wins for Bayern Munich.

What are the probable starting formations?

Dortmund is probably without Mario Götze while Patrick Owomoyela definitely is out for the final. For Bayern Holger Badstuber and Toni Kroos are sidelined for the final.

Weidenfeller

Kirch - Subotic - Hummels - Schmelzer

Gündogan - Bender

Blaszczykowski - Grosskreutz - Reus

Lewandowski
________________________________

Mandzukic

Robben - Müller - Ribéry

Schweinsteiger - Martinez

Alaba - Van Buyten - Boateng - Lahm

Neuer

What to expect from this match?

Dortmund is eager to win this match after losing the domestic league to the rivals from Munich. However, this is Bayern's chance to show that they are not only best in the German league but also in Europe.

Both teams have much of the same strengths and weaknesses why it is hard to find a favorite for this match. That said, a few more players from Munich have more experience with finals than most of the Dortmund players. This is something that can be crucial on Saturday.

What are the odds?

Paddy Power holds the best bet on a Dortmund victory with a 6/5 odds. Meanwhile, a draw gives 3 back a Bwin and a Munic victory gives the best odds at BETVictor with 15/4.

  • Name: Carlos Shiralipour
  • Age: 21 (06-05-1992)
  • Position: Right/Left back or Central Midfield
  • Club: Viborg FF
  • International Caps:
    • Denmark U18
      • 3 Matches
      • 0 Goals
  • Value: £25.000 (transfermarkt.co.uk)
A knee injury threatens to end the career, even before it has even started, but this talent keeps fighting. This week we keep an eye on Viborgs Carlos Shiralipour.

While Viborg is celebrating the promotion to the best Danish league, Superligaen, Carlos Shiralipour is hoping to be able to join them in the new season. The talented defender has been struggling with knee injuries since 2011 and seems to be some distance away from a comeback.

“When I sleep I dream about playing in the Superliga, but I wake up to the reality and the injury. It is only if everything works out right that I will be playing in the best league, in Denmark,” Shiralipour says.

The talent has been a part of Viborg's youth department, where he came on a contract as 15-year old, before being promoted to the senior squad in 2009. Here, he got his debut against Hvidovre when he was sent on after 77 minutes in the 3-0 victory.

Assistant Manager in Viborg, Søren Frederiksen, calls Shiralipour a great talent who has not been allowed to show his full potential yet, and at the same time thanks Viborgs youth department for developing one talent after the other:

“It is always great to that the work that is done in the youth department is successful, and Carlos is one of the players that have taken the chance and gotten a contract. It is great work from our youth coaches from U13 to U19; they make a tremendous work and they deserve all the tribute they can get.”

During his youth years, Shiralipour got three matches for the Danish U18 national team and could probably have gotten more. However, the player was in the shadow of other players at the time and acknowledged that he probably did not take the chance when he got it. However, as his mother is from Thailand, Carlos actually has the opportunity to play for the nation.

"It is a possibility, but it is not something I have thought about. However, you can never say never,” he says.

The injury that put the talents career on a break came in 2011, during a training match against Kjellerup IF. Shiralipour was was covering a ball when a player rambled into his knee. An ACL knee injury and 12 months away from the pitch.

“I went through surgery 3 months later and had a long recovery time, but had the motivation for a comeback," Shiralipour says.

Despite, the long injury time, Viborg decided to extend the talents contract with a year in 2012. Søren Frederiksen had no doubts when the leaders of the club were discussing the new contract:

“We wanted to give him support as we still believed in him and felt sorry for the lad. He didn’t get any great contract, but enough to make a living while he was recovering and hopefully would return and we wanted to help him. He never had the chance to show what he could, so we wanted to give him a chance.”

During autumn 2012, the talent returned to the training ground and felt the grass and the ball again. However, during a training session he sustained a new knee injury, and had to go through surgery in December. When the news about the injury spread in Viborg, fans made a TIFO wishing him well, and children made drawings and send them to their injured soldier. Today, Shiralipour is grateful for the support:

“It means everything for me as I have had all these injuries. Viborg is my hometown, and to have that kind of support is amazing and gives me believe that I one day can pull the Viborg shirt back on.”

The contract ends this summer, and while the player is still hoping for a comeback, he has prepared a plan B. Applications to different Danish Universities has been sent, and Shiralipour is hoping to study either psychology or medicine. However, returning to the pitch is still the main target:

"I still hope to come back, and sees it as a bonus if I can reach the same level as I had earlier. However, it is important to have other plans to fall back on if I can’t return to football," Shiralipour says.

Assistant Manager Søren Frederiksen shares his players hope:

“It is hard to say, but I know that Carlos has the will to come back, and he has always said that he will return and show what he is capable of. I respect him for that and hope he will return and play for us.”

Whether or not Carlos Shiralipour will return to the training ground and play for Viborg, or his future lies outside football is unknown. One thing is for sure; the player will fight to comeback, and the fans love him for it.

For some time, there has been talks about a salary cap in the English Premier League. Something, most of the clubs are arguing against. For the next couple of weeks, Great Dane Football Blog will put focus on the wages in the Premier League and find out if they have any impact on the club's chances of winning trophies.

Last week we looked on the best paid goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and attacker, among the five richest clubs in England. This week we take a look on the amount of money the clubs has spent every season since 2002/03, compared with other Premier League clubs. The first chart for every season shows all the clubs together while the second single out the five clubs we are investigating; Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.

As mentioned,  we start with the 2002/03 season of the Premier League. It is important to mention that the numbers from Bolton have been unavailable, why they do not figure in the chart. Not only was Manchester United the winner of the Premier League this season, they were also the club spending most on wages; 10.8 per cent of the total wages.
Arsenal follows just second both in the league and when it comes to wages, with 8.2 per cent of the total wages. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Liverpool stands for 7.4 per cent each they were placed fourth and fifth after Newcastle in the league. The Toons only spent £45.2m equal 6.1 per cent. It is worth mentioning that Leeds ended 15th in the league but was the club that spent third most on wages this season. Manchester City, on the other hand only takes 4.6 per cent of the wages for this season.

Take a look at the following charts to see the development both Chelsea and Manchester City have gone through and what impact the have had on the total wages. At the same time, Arsenal, Manchester United and   Liverpool have had a more steady development and impact.

Please not: Data for Crystal Palace is missing for the 2004/04 season
Please note: Data for Middlesbrough is missing for the season 2005/06 Please not: Data for Birmingham City and Portsmouth is missing for the 2009/10 season. Please not: Data for Birmingham City is missing for the 2010/11 season. What does the charts tell you? Do you think money have an impact on the trophy hunt? Next week we take a look on this season, before publishing the full article a couple of days later.

Amsterdam Arena is hosting Chelsea and Benfica is this years Europa League final - the match of the week.

Europa League Final
Amsterdam Arena
15-05-2013 @ 19.45 UK

How are the two teams form?

Chelsea is currently unbeaten in 7 matches and is 3rd in the Premier League. In the Europa League, took a victory on aggregate 4-2 against Basel in the semi finals. Meanwhile, Benfica is 2nd in the Portuguese 1. Division 1 point after Porto on the 1st. In the Europa League, Benfica won 3-2 on aggregate against Fenerbache in the semi finals.

The last meeting between the two teams was in last years Champions League. Here, Chelsea won both matches.

What are the probable starting XI's?

Rafa Benitez has talked about leaving John Terry and Frank Lampard out of the squad for the final, but after this weekends performance from Lampard, it is likely he will feature in the starting line.

Cech

Bertrand - Cahill - Ivanovic - Azpilicueta

Luiz - Lampard

Moses - Oscar - Hazard

Torres
________________________________________

Cardozo - Lima

Gaitán         -          Savio

Aimar

Matic

Melgarejo - Garay - Luisão - Pereira

Moraes

What to expect from this match?

Chelsea are favorites for the Europa League final, but their season has been a mix of good and bad performances. Meanwhile, Benfica has been more stable in this season. Comparing the two squads, Chelsea are far best and have the quality to cause great pain to Benfica. That said, Benfica's ability to make quick changes in the play as well as the magician Aimar on the attacking midfield will be interesting in this match. I could see Benfica take a 1-0 win in the final.

How are the odds?

The best odds for Chelsea to win is 6/4 from Bet365 while SkyBet gives a 12/5 for a Benfica win. Should the match end in a draw after the first 90 minutes Bet365 gives 21/10 back.

  • Name: Andreas Lissau
  • Age: 19 (23-02-1994)
  • Position: Striker
  • Club: Næstved BK
  • International caps: None
  • Value: £50.000
This week we keep an eye on Næstved's young striker Andreas Lissau. The player struggled when he joined the club, but suddenly he was one step ahead of the rest. Great Dane Football Blog presents yet another Danish talent.

Andreas Lissau joined Næstved from the minor Danish club, Præstø IF, and could barely make it on the youth team. But then, suddenly the striker caught the coach's interest.

"Suddenly things started to go my way, and I got a youth contract when I was 15, and was selected for some DBU [Danish FA] gatherings. I was promoted to the U17 squad a year earlier than normal, and again for the U19, so I have always been a year ahead,” Lissau says.

Impressing, the statistic for Lissau's season on the U17 team, says 13 goals and 19 assists in 14 matches. The talent was not to be mistaken as Lissau was promoted to the Næstved senior squad, then playing in the Danish 1. Divison, when he was only 17-year old. A year later, in 2011, he was given his debut against Randers FC.

While the striker has been a step ahead of his year throughout his youth career, the Næstved boy sees it as an important part of his development.

”It has always been a good way to put extra pressure on myself. I have always felt that I was good enough, and so did my coaches. It has helped me develop and add physical pressure on me, which I have been happy for,” Lissau says.

Despite having played well in his youth years in Næstved, the closest Lissau has been to playing national matches has been the DBU gatherings. However, playing for Denmark is not on his mind at the moment.

After showing impressing play for the U17/U19, Lissau finally had his breakthrough for Næstved in the winter 2012. Here, he was thrown into the match against FC Blokhus and scored his first goal after just 13 minutes. The breakthrough secured him a 2 year contract, and despite interest from other clubs Lissau decided to stay in Næstved. According to the player, two factors keep him in Næstved:

“It has been a mix of me feeling I still can develop in Næstved and some education, as well. There is a great setup with Næstved College, uniting football and school. At the same time, I don’t feel the right offer has come yet.”

And, manager Martin Jungsgaard is happy to keep his striker in his squad:

“He is a great in the switch of play, he has a great run with the ball, a great right leg and a player with a good pace."

But stress that Lissau is just any other player on the Næstved team:

“It might sound paradox, but he is not a MVP or anything on the team. Just like any other young player he faces opposition; he can play two good matches and then not show anything in the next two. He had a period on the bench and came back strengthen back.”

While, there has been clubs on the look for Andreas Lissau he is taking his time developing in Næstved and dreams of playing in the Danish Superliga within a couple of years. The ultimate dream would be Real Madrid, but the striker acknowledges that some dreams are more likely to happen than others.
