He has been on his way out, and the fans have a love/hate relationship to him; he is the new captain of Manchester United.

Both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, two former captains of the Red Devils, have left Manchester this summer leaving Louis van Gaal with a choice to make.

In 2010, he was ready to leave Manchester United and join the rivals from City according to British media. Wayne Rooney stayed in United, but in 2012, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that once again Rooney wanted to leave, but again the striker stayed. Yesterday he was announced to be the new United captain.

"For me it's always very important the choice of captain. Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team, and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role," van Gaal said to Manutd.com.

However, van Gaals choice is not greeted by all United fans. On the Manchester United community forum 'Talking Reds' a user named Captain Marvel No. 7 writes:
"Won't ever be a club legend in my eyes. He's been a great player for United, carried us at times but if I'm brutally honest if he could have got out of United he would have done.
Tried worming his way to City, didn't happen. Then he flirted with Chelsea & Mourinho last summer despite the fact he never asked to leave (Mourinho got encouragement from somewhere) and now he has been rewarded with the captaincy.
If Wayne gets his head down and plays to his potential then, it will benefits United but I'm far from ecstatic about the appointment. The last few years have left a sour taste and for that reason he will never be a legend IMO."

Other members of the community forum speculate in Rooney being the only candidate for the captaincy. And maybe he is. Looking at the current squad, he is the player with most years in the club and in a time where van Gaal is determined to create a new squad Rooney might be one of the most important players.

Even though he Rooney have been on his way out of the club, twice the last couple of years, the captaincy signals that he will finish his career with the Red Devils as other United legends have done. The question is then if the fans can live with him as their new captain?

According to the football data base transfermarkt.co.uk, these five players are the most valuable in the Premier League. Does their market value really live up to their performances?

5. Juan Mata, Chelsea
Market Value: £37.000.000

The Spanish midfielder has so far had 23 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League this season, scored 10 goals and made 12 assists. Joining Chelsea from Valencia in a £23.496.000 transfer, he has so far only won two trophies with the Londoners; the FA Cup and the Champions League. However, as statistics tell the 24-year-old is a great contributor to Chelsea's offensive. Furthermore, the EURO 2012 weighs high on his market value, which only a few would argue lives up to his performances.

4. David Silva, Manchester City
Market Value: £38.500.000

Manchester City's David Silva joined the club in 2010 for 25.3m and has been a regular starter ever since. The midfielder has so far appeared in 22 premier League matches for City this season and contributed with two goals and 7 assists. In his time, in Manchester City,  he has won the Premier League and the FA Cup. Impressing, but his current stats does not live up to his market value.

3. Robin van Persie, manchester United
Market Value: $39.500.000

The Dutch was a star in Arsenal and is still a star in Manchester United. Last season he was the topscorer in the Premier League, and since his £27m transfer in the summer, the goals has kept coming in his direction. This season he has made 18 goals in 25 matches including 9 assists. Definately worth his market value!

2. Kun Agüero, manchester City
Market value: £39.500.000

Sergio Aguero is one of the biggest profiles in Manchester City, or at least he was when joined from Atletico de Madrid in 2011. The 24-year-old striker has a Premier League trophy behind him and 41 goals for City. However, at the moment he has only scored 9 goals in this Premier League season might not just be 39.5m worth.

1. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United
Market Value: £57.000.000

Wayne Rooney is the most valuable player in the Premier League, according to transfermarkt.co.uk. At the same time,  he is the most valuable English player in the world, and it is no wonder given his history. Having his debut for Everton when he was only 16-years old and joining Manchester United two years after, the forward have not looked back. About 11 trophies after his transfer to United, he has almost doubled his value.

Robin van Persie's transfer to Manchester City has caused anger from Arsenal fans all over the world. However, van Persie is not the first player to make a 'Judas' change in English football.

10. Michael Owen
From Newcastle United to Manchester United, 2009

Even though, it had been five years since Owen wore the Liverpool shirt, his transfer from Newcastle to the rivals from Manchester made the fans from Merseyside furios.

In his first match at Anfield Road for Manchester United, he was met by a wall of noise from the home supporters.

9. Wayne Rooney
From Everton to Manchester United, 2004

Rooney's move to Manchester United will never be forgiven by the Everton fans. Mostly because the, back then, young star had declared "Once a blue, always a blue".

Even though, the rivalry between the two clubs is small, Rooney has been met with the cold shoulder from his, earlier, beloved fans.

  8. Jermain Defoe
From West Ham to Tottenham Hotspur, 2004

West Ham fans saw Jermain Defoe as a Judas after he handed in a transfer request. The Hammers had just been relegated from the Premier League, and Defoe's request was not received well.

The situation did not become better when Defoe signed with Tottenham Hotspur, and ever since the striker has been met with arrogance from the West Ham supporters.

7. Robin van Persie
From Arsenal to Manchester United, 2012

The tale of Robin van Persie is much alike the Defoe. van Persie's move to Manchester has left the Arsenal fans furios, but it is not so much the transfer that has upset the fans. It is the way it happened.

Many Gooners feel that Arsenal created Robin van Persie, so his request to leave the club has hit hard in the fans hearts. One thing is for sure: The Dutch will get a "warm" welcome at Emirates!

6. Alan Smith
From Leeds United to Manchester United, 2004

Alan Smith left Leeds United when the club needed him the most. This has and will never be forgotten by the Peacock fans. Smith has earlier declared that he would never move to the rivals from Manchester. However, after Leeds dismal relegation, this proved to be false.

Allan Smith quickly changed from at beloved Leeds player, to a hated Manchester United footballer.

5. Nick Barmby
   From Everton to Liverpool, 2000

Transfers between Everton and Liverpool is rare, and always hard for the player. Nick Barmby was the first player to move from Goodison Park to Anfield Road, since Dave Hickson in 1959. His move from the Toffee's who was struggling in the lower part of the table has never been forgiven.

When ever Barmby has played on Goodison Park, he has been met by a wall of boos.

4. Emmanuel Adebayor
From Arsenal to Manchester City, 2009

When Adebayor left Arsenal for Manchester, the striker blamed the supporters for being the reason. This, as well, as the fact that he ran the from one end of the pitch to the other, to celebrate in front of the Gunners fans has left him as one of the most hated ex-Arsenal players.

It doesn't make it better that he later was on loan in Tottenham. After the terrible attack on the Tongolese national team, Arsenal fans sang "it should have been you".

3. Carlos Tevez
From Manchester United to Manchester City, 2009

A move between the two Manchester clubs never goes unnoticed. When Tevez joined City, he went from hero to villian for the United fans. Tevez felt that Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his promises and joined the blue part of town.

The hate grew when Manchester City posted a "Welcome to Manchester" poster in the city.

2. Ashley Cole
From Arsenal to Chelsea FC, 2006

After months of negotiating, Ashley Cole made a controversial move to the rivals from Chelsea FC. Cole had demanded a enormous wage, which Wenger was not ready to deliver, and the defender was seen as greedy by the Arsenal fans.

At the first meeting between the clubs, after the signing, Cole was met by booing and fans waving fake cash.

1. Sol Campbell
From Tottenham Hotspur to Arsenal, 2001

Sol Campbell is the man behind the most controversial transfer in the history of the Premier League. Campbell had promised the Spurs' fans that he would never make the switch. However,  in 2001 Campbell signed with Arsenal on a free transfer, leaving Tottenham with nothing.

The hate against Campbell has resulted in Spurs fans being arrested for their racists chants.
