Real Madrid only needed 41 minutes to beat Liverpool at Anfield - Can Liverpool bite back at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu?

Real Madrid v Liverpool
Champions League Group B
Estadio Santiago Bernabeu
4-11-2014 @ 19.45 GMT

How are the two sides current form?

Real Madrid are unbeaten in their last seven matches in the La Liga, as well as they are unbeaten in the Champions League Group B, so far. Cristiano Ronaldo is here, there and everywhere at the moment scoring 17 goals in ten La Liga matches and will be a mouthful for Liverpool.

Liverpool are struggling in the Premier League this season and seems to be unable to follow up on last seasons impressing play. They are currently third in the Champions League group with three points for three matches.

What are the probable line-ups?

Real Madrid are struggling with injuries as Jesé, Sami Khedira, Illarramendi, and Daniel Carvajal are all out with injuries. Fabio Coentrao is back from injury but is doubtful for the match. Liverpools injury list is long as well with Jose Enrique, Daniel Sturridge, Mamdou Sakho, John Flanagan and Suso sidelined.

Casillas

Marcelo - Pepe - Varane - Arbeloa

Modric - Kroos

James

Ronaldo - Benzema - Bale
____________________________________

Balotelli

Coutinho - Sterling

Can - Henderson

Gerrard

Moreno - Lovren - Skrtel - Manquillo

Mignolet

Worth keeping an eye on

Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo - Cristiano Ronaldo is here, there and everywhere these days. The Portuguese has played well the last many seasons, but this season he has been incredible. He alone can send Liverpool out in the dark.

Liverpool: Simon Mignolet - The Belgian goalkeeper has to play his best against Real Madrid, if Liverpool is to have any chance.

What to expect from this match?

Real Madrid seems unstoppable this season and Liverpool is just another bump in the way towards the Champions League title. Liverpool needs a miracle if they are to get points on Santiago Bernabeu. There is no doubt that Real Madrid will play their usual quick attacking play, and the Liverpool defend will have to play a match above the standards shown in the Premier League this season. I have no doubt; Real Madrid will win this match.

What are the odds?

Real Madrid: 1/4 (Coral)

Draw: 33/5 (Matchbook)

Liverpool: 12 (Boylesport)

It's Friday and time for the look back on the week that have gone. Liverpool is reaching for the trophy while
Swansea players are fighting. Read much more about the week in the Friday Five.

Sunday 13th April - Liverpool beats Manchester City

Liverpool took a huge step towards the title on an emotional day at Anfield Road. Raheem Sterling gave the Merseyside club the lead after just six minutes followed up by Martin Skrtel after 26 minutes. Manchester City managed to fight back in the second half by a goal from David Silva before Glen Johnson scored an own goal. However, with 12 minutes left Phillippe Coutinho scored the match winning goal leading to Liverpool's 10th win on the spin. It certainly looks as we have found the Champions, but not if you ask Steven Gerrard.

Tuesday 15th April - Hillsborough disaster anniversary

Liverpool came to a standstill on Tuesday as the city marked the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. Church bells across Merseyside rang 96 times at 3.06pm, the exact time the FA Cup match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was abandoned.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: "This year marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Hillsborough tragedy and the families' long fight for justice."

"Not only is it the 25th anniversary of the tragedy but we also have the start of fresh inquests into how the 96 lost their lives."

Past and present Liverpool players attended the ceremony as well a number of politicians.

Tuesday 15th April - Swansea in-fight

It emerged, on Tuesday, that Swansea players once again have been in a fight during training. In January it was revealed that Chico Flores had picked up a brick during a row with Monk, back when monk was still active as a player. Just two weeks after Laudrup was sacked. Since then, Monk has taken over as an interim-manager, and now  the dressing room has been ripped apart by in-fighting between the players once again. According to the Daily Mail, Monk had organised a training game trying to get the Hull defeat out of the system. However, the plan was undermined by a training ground fight involving not less than six first-team players. To make the situation even worse for Monk, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins witnessed the clash.

Wednesday 16th April - Gareth Bale goal

No words are needed.

Thursday 17th April - Sepp Blatter with new controversial - but good suggestion

The FIFA-president Sepp Blatter is known for his controversial opinions and suggestions and has never been afraid of saying what he wants. Once again he has come forward with a debatable argument, but in some way it  makes sense. Blatter wants to fight racism in football by making it possible to deduct points from the clubs with fans showing racist behaviour. As it is now, FIFA punishes the clubs with a warning, and with several incidents they can issue fines or order the club to play for a closed stadium.

"In the final analysis matches played behind closed doors penalise football. The punishment is unduly excessive. Instead, it is the troublemakers who must be punished. And it is clear to me that the clubs are responsible for the hooligans.

"To my mind there remains only one solution to the problem: sporting sanctions are the only effective punishment. It has to cause the clubs real hurt otherwise nothing will change," Blatter said.

Another week has gone by, and a lot have happened in the world of football; Great Dane Football Blog have picked five highlights, in a week where records have been broken.

Friday March 14 - Anelka sacked by West Bromwich

Nicolas Anelka's West Bromwich Albion career ended Friday night when the French nomad was sacked for "gross misconduct." The striker was given a five-match ban and a £80,000 fine by the FA for the quenelle gesture he mad at Upton Park in December. Just hours before he was sacked, he Anelka announced that he was terminating his playing contract with the club, but it turned out he was sacked. His hunt for a new club might turn out to be a hard one as FIFA is considering a global ban for the 'quenelle.'

Sunday March 15 - Mourinho

Aston Villa won against Chelsea on Sunday, but it was Willian, Ramires and Mourinho who stole the picture. First, Willian was sent off after two yellow cards, then Ramires, rightful, was sent off before Mourinho was asked to leave the bench for arguing with the ref. William only had himself to blame after receiving a second yellow card for a cynical challenge to stop a Delph run. Ramires challenge was not much better, and finally Mourinho felt the referee was against him. Mourinho was yesterday charged for improper misconduct.

Sunday March 15 - Zlatan breaks PSG record

The Swede took his season tally to a club-record with 40 goals in the 2-0 win against St Etienne. Ibrahimovic surpassed Carlos Bianchi's record from the 1977-78 season where the Argentine scored 39 goals. Zlatan surely is one of the best strikers in the world, but credits have to be given to the team behind him and the league he is playing in. Many still believes that Zlatan could be playing in a much better league than the French. However, the Swede can now add another record to his long cv.

Monday March 16 - Lionel Messi breaks Barcelona record

He is only 26 but have already made his 25th hat-trick for Barcelona on Sunday. As it wasn't enough, the hattrick helped the Argentinian to become Barcelona's all-time leading scorer when he helped his side to a 7-0 win over Osasuna. Messi have now scored 371 goals and eclipsed the record set by Paulino Alcantara who scored 369 goals in 356 appearances between 1912-1927. This is the sixth consecutive season in which the Argentinian has scored 30 goals, and currently on 18 goals this season.

Tuesday March 17 - Ronaldo is set to break record

After Real Madrid's Champions League win against Schalke on Wednesday, where Ronaldo scored twice the Portuguese is only 2 goals away from breaking the Champions League goalscoring record. The record holder at the moment is Ronaldo's rival from Barcelona with 14 goals. However, with 13 goals on the account Ronaldo is more than likely to take the Champions League goalscoring record this season.

Since Blackpool's Stanley Matthews won the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1956, only five British
players have been given the prestigious prize. The last was Michael Owen in 2001.

British players have been praised in the past, with not less than 21 players in top three over the years, before the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or merged and kept the French name in 2010. Since then,  no British player or any foreign Premier League player have been able to make it into the crucial top.

Given the Premier League is valued as one of the best in the world it is incredible that the players are unable to make it when it comes to Ballon d'Or. It is not like there aren't any players with the potential: Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Luis Suarez, Frank Lampard, Robin van Persie etc. However, it seems that one of the criteria for competing for the award is to be able to score goals. A lot of goals.

The last three years Lionel Messi have won the award twice and Ronaldo once. The other positions have been shared between Xavi Hernandez or Andres Iniesta. The last three years, all the players, have been from the Spanish La Liga - Surprise! This year Franck Ribéry is mingling among Ronaldo and Messi to become the world's best footballer. However, chances are that it will be the small Argentinian or the Metrosexual Portuguese that will run with the title.

The difference between the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga is easy to see. While English football is more tactical (it is beginning to be more attacking), Spanish football is almost all attack - More or less. While the Premier League is more competitive between a number of clubs, the Spanish is almost always a battle between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Funny enough, their two star players are fighting for the Ballon d'Or, as well. Now, with Ribéry in play does that mean that the German league is better than the English?

Well, Bayern Munich and Dortmund were the Champions League finalist last season and many football fans are starting to see the 1. Bundesliga as better than the English Premier League. So in some way, the German league is better than the English. That said, the money in the PL and the prestige is higher than the German, and I think all small boys dream of playing in England. However, it seems as if a player dreams of winning Ballon d'Or he should join every other league than the PL.

  • Name: Andreas Lissau
  • Age: 19 (23-02-1994)
  • Position: Striker
  • Club: Næstved BK
  • International caps: None
  • Value: £50.000
This week we keep an eye on Næstved's young striker Andreas Lissau. The player struggled when he joined the club, but suddenly he was one step ahead of the rest. Great Dane Football Blog presents yet another Danish talent.

Andreas Lissau joined Næstved from the minor Danish club, Præstø IF, and could barely make it on the youth team. But then, suddenly the striker caught the coach's interest.

"Suddenly things started to go my way, and I got a youth contract when I was 15, and was selected for some DBU [Danish FA] gatherings. I was promoted to the U17 squad a year earlier than normal, and again for the U19, so I have always been a year ahead,” Lissau says.

Impressing, the statistic for Lissau's season on the U17 team, says 13 goals and 19 assists in 14 matches. The talent was not to be mistaken as Lissau was promoted to the Næstved senior squad, then playing in the Danish 1. Divison, when he was only 17-year old. A year later, in 2011, he was given his debut against Randers FC.

While the striker has been a step ahead of his year throughout his youth career, the Næstved boy sees it as an important part of his development.

”It has always been a good way to put extra pressure on myself. I have always felt that I was good enough, and so did my coaches. It has helped me develop and add physical pressure on me, which I have been happy for,” Lissau says.

Despite having played well in his youth years in Næstved, the closest Lissau has been to playing national matches has been the DBU gatherings. However, playing for Denmark is not on his mind at the moment.

After showing impressing play for the U17/U19, Lissau finally had his breakthrough for Næstved in the winter 2012. Here, he was thrown into the match against FC Blokhus and scored his first goal after just 13 minutes. The breakthrough secured him a 2 year contract, and despite interest from other clubs Lissau decided to stay in Næstved. According to the player, two factors keep him in Næstved:

“It has been a mix of me feeling I still can develop in Næstved and some education, as well. There is a great setup with Næstved College, uniting football and school. At the same time, I don’t feel the right offer has come yet.”

And, manager Martin Jungsgaard is happy to keep his striker in his squad:

“He is a great in the switch of play, he has a great run with the ball, a great right leg and a player with a good pace."

But stress that Lissau is just any other player on the Næstved team:

“It might sound paradox, but he is not a MVP or anything on the team. Just like any other young player he faces opposition; he can play two good matches and then not show anything in the next two. He had a period on the bench and came back strengthen back.”

While, there has been clubs on the look for Andreas Lissau he is taking his time developing in Næstved and dreams of playing in the Danish Superliga within a couple of years. The ultimate dream would be Real Madrid, but the striker acknowledges that some dreams are more likely to happen than others.

Michael Laudrup continued his impressing season in Swansea, bringing the League Cup Trophy to Swansea. The Dane has a history of leaving clubs faster than a Mario Balotelli can get a booking; is he leaving Wales?

Laudrup is a legend in European football, and a legend will always be surrounded by rumours. Latest, Laudrup was on his way to Real Madrid, then Manchester City but Wales seems to be the place for the Dane.

Despite having a history of changing between European clubs, the Swansea manager has already said that he is ready to sign a new contract with the Welsh club. The latest results show that Swansea play style and Laudrup's name are a great mix that might get far. However, a lot needs to happen before the Welsh will be found in top three of the Premier League.

The question is if the manager will get an offer he cannot refuse. Manchester City and Real Madrid might be able to give the Laudrup free hands to buy who ever he wants. However, the pressure on the two teams might just be too much for the Dane. Furthermore, in Swansea Laudrup has the board's confidence and he will have to screw up big time to lose his seat in Wales.

The League Cup was Laudrup's first big trophy since leaving Brøndby in 2006, and he will be thirsty for more. At the moment,  Swansea is the place for Laudrup and here he has the impact he wants to have; latest bringing in Morten Wieghorts to the staff. The next season will be even more interesting than this as Laudrup will have to show that this was not just a  one time performance. Then, we can talk about Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Wednesday's Champions League features a meeting between number one and two in Group D. Match of the Week is between Dortmund and Real Madrid:

Champions League Group D
Westfalenstadion
24-10-2012 @ 19.45 BST

How is the two teams form?

Dortmund has not had the start of the season as they hoped for. However, the results have been better in Champions League. Currently positioned as number two in the group, they won 1-0 against Ajax and had a draw with Manchester City.

Like Dortmund, Real Madrid has not been too convincing so far in the Primera Division. So far they are positioned four with four wins, 2 draws and two lost games. However, they are unbeaten in the last four matches. It is going better in the Champions League where Manchester City and Ajax were beaten.

What will the starting XI look?

Dortmund will probably keep the starting line they have used for the last couple of Champions League games. The Real Madrid squad is so strong, that no changes will make a difference. However, I don't expect any real surprises why my bid will be:
Weidenfeller

Bender - Hummels - Subotic

Kehl

Leitner - Perisic - Großkreutz - Piszczek

Reus - Lewandowski
-----------------------------------------------
Higuaín

Di Maria - Ronaldo

Modric - Khedira - Alonso

Marcelo - Ramos - Pepe - Arbeloa

Casillas

What to expect from the match?

Real Madrid are the favorites for this match, and Dortmund will have their trouble. However, Dortmund will not play a defensive match. Both teams has some skilled offensives and we can expect some fantastic football from both sides. When that is said Madrid will probably pull out of this as winner.

What are the odds?

Dortmund are the favorites for this match, according to oddschecker.com. A Real Madrid victory gives an average of 11/10 back.

A very unlikely transfer has been rumoured by the Daily Star today.

According to the tabloid, Leicester's Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is a target for Real Madrid. José Mourinho has instructed his goalkeeping coach to find alternatives to the Spanish keeper Iker Casillas.

However, the Spanish club is also keeping an eye on Real Zaragoza's Roberto, 26, and Osasuna's Andres Fernandez,25.

Even though, Schmeichel has a past in Manchester City, Notts County and Leeds United, as well as a number of Danish youth national matches he has not achieved the same success as his father.

Peter Schmeichel was the safety man in Manchester United for eight years playing 292 matches and scoring three goals. Furthermore, he won the Premier League five times, the League Cup once, the FA Cup three times and the Champions League once. His Denmark career gave him 129 matches and one goal.

His son, Kasper, has been called up for the Danish national team but is still missing his debut. He was voted Leicester's player of the season last campaign, but still hasn't won any trophies.

Rumours also sends Iker Casillas to English football, should Mourinho bring in a new goalkeeper.

              Name: Nicolaj Ritter
               Age: 20 (8-5-1992)
          Position: Wing
              Club: Silkeborg IF
International caps: Denmark U20:  1 Match(es)
                                  0 Goal(s)
                    Denmark U19:  5 Match(es)
                                  1 Goal(s)
                    Denmark U18: 11 Match(es)

                    Denmark U16:  4 Match(es)
                                  0 Goal(s)
             Value: £175.000 (Transfermarkt.co.uk)

”He is an aggressive, offensive player who loves to interfere in every situation of the match, even when he is not near the ball. He is a player who lives in the game and the type of player who can make things happen”
                                              - Keld Bordingaard, Coach of Silkeborg IF

Nicolaj Ritter moved around between minor clubs in North Jutland, before joining Aalborg BK. However, before his youth career was even started he joined the FC Midtjylland Academy, where he played together with last week’s talent Mads Hvilsom.

“It was a difficult choice to leave Aalborg. I was doing fine and thought that it was the club for me. However, after seeing the concept in FC Midtjylland, with the academy, the school and the pitches I fell in love with the idea. It seemed so professional at the Academy”.
Ritter joined Midtjylland at the age of fifteen, and thereby had most of his youth in the club. Here, he won two Danish youth Championships and participated in several international cups. It was also in Midtjylland Ritter found his way to the Danish youth national team. However, his senior debut was to be in another club. Last summer, the winger joined Silkeborg IF:

“My time in Midtjylland was the best and I believe that it is the best place to be as a young player. However, I felt that I wouldn’t have any game time on the senior team. To develop I needed some senior game time and I felt that Silkeborg could give it to me”.

In the new club, Ritter went from being nobody to be in the starting XI. His debut in the best Danish league came, ironically, in the 2-1 win against his former club FC Midtjylland. However, the break trough is still to come, but one of the team mates in Silkeborg – former Bolton striker Henrik Pedersen – is sure this is the season for Ritter. The young winger is happy for the trust in him:

“I feel that I am getting better and better from every match I get, and I am proud and happy that a great player as Henrik, trust in me. I just hope I can live up to the expectations”.

Silkeborg coach Keld Bordingaard ensures that the break through is not impossible for Ritter, but he can’t “promise either Henrik or Ritter that it will happen.”

Since his transfer to Silkeborg, Nicolaj Ritter has been a part of the Danish U19 national team as well as the U20, where he had his debut this year. It is a dream for the young player, to play for the Danish senior national team, however; it is not something he worries about at the time. Instead, Ritter dreams to transfer to a foreign club one day:

“If I have the chance in a couple of years, it is defiantly an opportunity. I would really like to experience life as a Dane in a foreign club.”

Ritter would prefer to play in the Dutch or Spanish league, and has Real Madrid as his favorite team. However, right now the talent keeps his feet on the Danish ground, and his coach urges him to stay there:

“Right now there is plenty of challenges for Ritter, in the Danish Superliga.”

Andreas Laudrup had his youth career in Boldklubben Søllerød-Vedbæk before joining Lyngby BK in the 2006/07 season. Laudrup was invited on a trial to the Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam twice in his first year in Lyngby, and it was reported that Barcelona and Real Madrid also were interested in a tryout for the young player.

When Andreas Laudrup’s father, the Danish football legend, Michael Laudrup was hired as manager for the Spanish La Liga team Gestafe, Andreas joined Real Madrid. As Andreas Laudrups father is a well known name in Spanish football, the player decided to use his mother’s maiden name, Retz, to avoid attention around his personality. Danish U21 national coach Morten Wieghorst why the player chose to use another name:
“As soon as the name Laudrup is being mentioned, you think of especially Michael and Brian. People, conscious or unconscious, compare Andreas with his father and uncle. It is a heavy burden for a young player, but Andreas is aware of how it is and has become much stronger as well as a lot better in tackling this than he was before”.

The former FCN-coach also said that Andreas Laudrup was “beginning to make a name of himself”, and that it was “the best thing he could do, as people at some point will associate the name with him and not his father and uncle”.

During his time in Real Madrid’s youth department, the Spanish club was very eager to get him on a full time contract. Real Madrid’s youth coach, Juvenil A Alejandro Menéndez Garcia, said to the Danish newspaper B.T:
“What I have seen from Andreas Laudrup is very positive. He has the right ingredients to become a star player”.

When Michael Laudrup signed a contract as manager for Russian Spartak Moscow, the club tried to sign Andreas, as well. However, they younger Laudrup rejected and instead transferred back to Lyngby on a free contract, to play as an amateur.

Three months after his transfer to Lyngby, the young attacker, was about to sign with a new Dutch club Heerenveen, according to the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. Asked if Laudrup is too good to Danish football, Morten Wieghorst said:
“Andreas is still a young player, and he is in a good club [FC Nordsjælland] at the moment, with a great environment, where they are good at developing young players. He has already of first team experience in the Danish Superliga, and he needs more of it before he can take the next step”.

In January 2009, Laudrup transferred to his current club FCN where he signed a contract for 3 years. He had his debut against Brøndby IF 3 months after he joined the club. Great performances for his club resulted in a place in the Danish U21 squad, where he had his debut in the 1-0 victory against Mexico. Morten Wieghorst, who at that time was Laudrup’s manager in Nordsjælland here, gives his view on the players’ strengths and weaknesses:

“He has his best forces in the offensive play. When he has players around him whom he can play combination plays with, then he is really dangerous for the opponent because he has  quick feet and at the same time he knows where his teammates are. What he is working a lot with and what he is putting in his play is to be more decisive in the matches and thereby bringing himself or his fellow player in a position to finish at goal”.

Andreas Laudrup signed a new contract with FCN last year, keeping him in the club for at least 2014.

For: The well honoured Frenchman is the most winning manager ever in Arsenal, and perhaps Wenger could bring some of his luck and mentality to the team. Arsène Wenger joined Arsenal in 1996 and did not only revolutionise Arsenal but also English football. However, the revolution seems not to have reached the English national team.

Wenger has a long tradition of bringing talents to Arsenal and give them their breakthrough. With Wenger as manager for England, players as Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck, could perhaps take it to the next level and develop into attackers of European class.

Against: If the Football Association decides to try and get Le Professeur as manager for the England team on of the main questions will be if Arsenal is willing to let him go. Arsène Wenger is the spirit of the club, and it would probably cost a fortune to buy him free. Even if, the FA should have the luck to buy him free, I doubt Wenger is willing to leave Arsenal as it has been a life work for him and he will probably not get the same power in the FA as he has in the club.

Another question is if the national team is ready for a manager as Wenger with his attacking 4-1-4-1 formation instead of the often used 4-4-2.

Wenger as England’s next manager? I doubt it. Mostly because of his love to Arsenal and likewise the clubs love to him. Wengers football style may be more appropriate for the French national team.

Best Manager in the World: 2010

For: José Mourinho is the manager with most titles and personal honours on the shortlist. This talks for itself. Another factor that talks for Mourinho as the new manager is that he knows English football as well as Wenger do, and he has made results with Chelsea. It is then up to one and another whether or not these results, in fact, were because of Ambramovichs money. However, Mourinho has showed before that he can get results out of nothing as he did in Porto, where he against all odds won the UEFA Champions League.

Mourinho has almost won everything possible for a club team and the chance of writing a European Championship on his C.V could be a motivating factor for him. Spanish media earlier reported that Real Madrid was on the lookout for a new manager if Mourinho did not bring a trophy to Santiago Bernabeu this season, and the manager has been spotted in London looking for housing.

Against: Mourinho has earlier said to The Sun that he his next job will be in England as he has ‘unfinished businesses'. This unfinished business could well be winning the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, but he has also been reported as the next Tottenham Hotspurs manager if Harry Redknapp should take over the national team. Mourinho  has a fantastic C.V, but he also has a tarnished reputation as one of the most controversial managers. In a time where the FA struggles with racism charges against the former captain, John Terry, a controversial manager might not be the best signing.

Mourinho as England’s next manager? It is possible. Mourinho has all the qualities to bring England to the final stages of the European Championship. Mourinho would be an eminent name to lead the team, but The Football Association has to think wisely before hiring such a controversial manager.

Harry Redknapp

             Age: 65 (02-03-1947)
    Current team: Tottenham Hotspurs
    Former teams: Bournemouth,
                  West Ham United,
                  Portsmouth,
                  Southampton
          Titles: Bournemouth:
                  Football League
                  Division Three,
                  Football League Trophy
West Ham United: UEFA Intertoto Cup
                  Portsmouth: Football League Division One,
                  FA Cup
Personal honours: Premier League Manager of the Year: 2009-10
Premier League Manager of the Month:
                  April 2004, October 2004, March 2005,
                  April 2006, August 2009, September 2011,
                  November 2011

For: The shortlist’s oldest manager Harry Redknapp is not only the FAs, but also the fans, favourite to the position. The Englishman has been manager for English teams all his career but has only won two significant trophies. However, the manager has proved his worth first in Portsmouth and now Tottenham, which he has guided to the top of the Premier League. The managers experience and knowledge about English football makes him attractive for leading England. A position the Englishman has already shown his interest for. Furthermore, his coaching style matches the English squad, and he has proved that he can make something out of nothing.

Against: The fact that Redknapp has only won two significant trophies and only has been managing English clubs could be seen as a lack of international experience. This could be important in a position as national manager. Another fact is that Tottenham Hotspurs is not willing to let Redknapp go and have a £5m release clause in his contract, according to the Daily Mail. On top of that, The Football Association has to pay the remaining 15 months.

Harry Redknapp as England’s next manager? Most likely. As mentioned, is Redknapp the favourite to the position and he is interested in taking it. The only thing that seems to block the appointment of him is the £5m release clause.

Pep Guardiola

              Age: 41 (18-01-1971)
     Current team: Barcelona
     Former teams: Barcelona B
           Titles: Barcelona B:
                   Tercera División
                   Barcelona:
                   La Liga x 3,
                   Copa del Rey,
                   Supercopa de
                   España x 3,
UEFA Champions League x 2, UEFA Super Cup x 2,
FIFA Club World Cup x 2
Personal honours: IFFHS World's Best Club Coach
                   of the Year: 2009, 2010
Don Balon Award for Best Coach of the Year:
                   2009, 2010, 2011
Onze d'Or Coach of the Year: 2009, 2011
                   Miguel Muñoz Trophy: 2008-09, 2009-10
                   World Soccer Magazine World
Manager of the Year: 2009, 2011
UEFA Team of the Year Best Coach: 2009, 2011
La Liga Coach of the Year: 2009, 2010, 2011
FIFA Ballon d'Or Best Coach: 2011

For: The shortlist’s youngest prospect is also one of the most successful. Like Wenger, Guardiola is a fan of attacking football and would  be a great name for England. Even though, he has only been managing one team on high level, he has won everything that can be won by a club team. Some of the titles more than twice. The Barcelona manager also has a flair for young players and might be able to build up a new English national team.

Guardiolas contract with Barcelona ends after this season, and he can thereby sign with England for free.

Against: Guardiola might not be ready to manage a national team and he has been linked with Mexican club Chivas. However, it is more likely that he will sign a new contract with Barcelona. It would be a great task for Guardiola to take the position. However, if he fails with England, his chances as Spanish national manager in the future might distant. Another question is if the FA can afford to bring such a prominent name and his salary to England and if there is enough prestige in it for the young manager.

Guardiola as England’s next manager? Not a chance! This is a longshot from the Football Association. Guardiola is young and it might be too early for him to take charge of a national team. I believe that we will see the manager in Barcelona a few years longer.

Roy Hodgson

             Age: 64 (09-08-1947)
    Current team: West Bromwich Albion
     Former team: Carshalston
                  Athletic,
                  Halmstad,
                  Bristol City,
                  Oddevold, Örebro,
                  Malmö FF,
                  Neuchâtel Xamax,
                  Switzerland,
                  Internazionale, Blackburn Rovers,
                  Grashopper, FC Copenhagen, Udinese,
United Arab Emirates, Viking, Finland, Fulham,
                  Liverpool
          Titles: Halmstad: Allsvenskan x 2
                  Malmö FF: Allsvenskan x 5, Svenska Cupen x 2
FC Copenhagen: Danske Superliga, Danske Super
                  Cup
Personal honours: LMA Manager of the Year: 2010

For: The most experienced manager when it comes to national teams. Roy Hodgson has been in charge of not less than three nations and a couple of teams in Europe. The international experience could be useful for England, and Hodgson do know the English players and league as the back of his hand. Another factor is that the manager often uses a 4-4-2 formation he can use on the national team.

Against: Roy Hodgson might not be the most prominent name to lead the team. He has a lot of experience but, the Allsvenskan and Danske Superliga titles do not  ring a bell for the fans. His great period at Fulham followed up by his miserable stay at Liverpool FC might also scare the FA from hiring him.

Hodgson as England’s next manager? Most unlikely. Hodgson must be one of the last on the shortlist. He has the experience, but that is pretty much it. His career has been like a rollercoaster, and I believe that the Football Association will be taking a chance by hiring Hodgson.

Stuart Pearce

              Age: 49 (24-04-1962)
     Current team: Great Britain Olympic
                   England (Caretaker)
                   England U21
     Former teams: Nottingham Forest
                   (Caretaker),
                   Manchester City
           Titles: None
 Personal honours: None

For: Stuart Pearce has taken the role as caretaker until a new manager is found and has already said that he is interested in being a permanent manager at some point. He is appointed as manager for the Great Britain Olympics team and is in charge of the England U21. He knows the system from the inside. The fact that he is in charge of the U21 team, makes him aware of whom is going to be the next players to represent England, and he will be able to build the team up as he wants it.

Against: It might be too early for Stuart Pearce to be managing a national team on this level. Given that he has only managed two club teams through out his career makes me think that he might need a bit more experience.

Pearce as England’s next manager? Likely. If the FA fails to sign Redknapp and Pearce makes some convincing results, he might be able to keep the position. However, I still think it is too early for him.

So, who is it going to be? Only the FA knows, but Harry Redknapp is most likely to be the next manager. Arsène Wenger looks hard to sign as he will not leave Arsenal for any price. José Mourinho and Pepe Guadiola are out of the picture. Mainly because Mourinho is more likely to return to Chelsea while Guadiola just sounds too good to be true. If The Football Association fails to sign Redknapp, Stuart Pearce might be the next manager as he, as mentioned, is already a part of the system. Finally, Roy Hogdson will only be hired if anything else fails.
